A hearing aid is a precise piece of technology worn all day, every day — often in a warm, humid ear canal. A little routine care goes a long way toward keeping it working reliably and lasting as long as possible. Most of the hearing aid repairs we see at Indian Hearing Aid Center trace back to two things: moisture and earwax buildup, both of which are largely preventable with a simple daily habit.
Daily Cleaning
Set aside a minute each evening when you remove your hearing aids:
- Wipe the outer surfaces with a soft, dry cloth to remove oil, sweat, and debris
- Gently brush the microphone openings and receiver with the soft brush that came with your device, brushing debris away from the openings rather than into them
- Check the tubing or dome for visible wax and clean it with the wax pick or loop provided by your audiologist
- Never use water, alcohol, or cleaning solvents directly on a hearing aid
Protecting Against Moisture
Humidity and perspiration are among the most common causes of hearing aid faults. A few habits make a real difference:
- Store your hearing aids in a dry, protective case overnight, ideally with the battery door open to let air circulate
- Consider a dehumidifier or UV sanitizing box for overnight storage, especially during Punjab’s humid monsoon months
- Remove hearing aids before showering, swimming, or applying hairspray or perfume
- If a hearing aid does get wet, dry the outside gently and place it in a dehumidifier case as soon as possible — avoid using a household hairdryer, microwave, or oven
Battery Care
For disposable-battery hearing aids, replace batteries roughly weekly or as soon as sound starts to weaken or distort, and store spare batteries away from heat and moisture. For rechargeable models, follow the manufacturer’s charging schedule and avoid leaving the device on the charger well beyond a full charge. Either way, open the battery door when the hearing aid isn’t in use so trapped moisture can evaporate.
When to See a Professional
Bring your hearing aids in for a professional check if you notice any of the following:
- Sound is muffled, weak, or cutting in and out even with a fresh battery
- Whistling or feedback that doesn’t stop when properly inserted
- Visible wax buildup you can’t safely remove yourself
- Physical damage, cracks, or a loose-fitting earmold
